I have had this drive since April 2016. I searched high and low for a drive like this. I use it for a part time server and part time at my gigs so it is transported often. Everything I saw in portable drives had flimsy arsed usb3 connectors. Those flimsy things caused total corruption on a non backed up 3tb drive with 2.5 TB of data that I used to use. This one after much much searching is just what you need if you want to keep your data for 10+ years, drive running 24/7 serving information, or if you need to move it all over the place such as in DJing or photography. This puppy has a solid aluminum casing with aluminum heatsink as well as an apple style USB connector that is solid. It is a 7200 RPM drive and very fast at USB3 speeds. It is a true Hitachi drive as well which are known to be probably the best you can get. These are technically for an Apple computer, but instructions are included to easily format it in modern PC OS. They have these also in 4 and 6 TB should you need that space.

The G-Drive works OK but there is a conflict with Time Machine from Apple. Power off and restart the G-Drive will restore the back up option once but it fail after the first backup

Great drive
Excellent external drive for my MacBook! Super fast transfers of videos and acts as if it's a internal drive with zero lag playing back. I reccomended partitioning the drive as it will give you additional back up if something goes wrong. The drive itself is rather large but very Mac like inspired design and fits well with my other equipment. This is not really a drive I would consider traveling with and is more suited to be a stationary drive for editing or mass storage.

unreliable fast external drive, lost all my data twice
Super good / fast external drive. I got one that was a dud but the supplier replaced it immediately and the new one's been working like a charm for many months now. After a year of use it spontaneously lost everything and said I could not use the drive without reformatting it. Total bummer. I now consider this drive to be completely unreliable.

Fine drive
I have several G-Technology external drives - this one is my TimeMachine disk attached to one of my Macs, and it works well in that role. In my case, I'm using the USB 3 interface and getting pretty close to the claimed 165MB/sec throughput...seems to be the fastest of the interfaces I have to choose from (but in fairness, the Mac it's connected to doesn't have an external eSATA connector, so my choices are pretty much USB or FireWire). It's not clear from the photo, but this is a large and substantial drive. Much bigger than the G-DRIVE Mini I also use (and to be clear, much faster as well). It runs cool and seems well protected from vibration and so forth - important for the type of drive you want to leave running continuously. Only real complaint is that I find it much louder than similar drives from other vendors, and even other G-Technology drives. When TimeMachine fires up a backup every hour or so, it's like a small jet engine spooling up under my desk. Otherwise, G-Technology makes amazing products and I'm sure it'll last a good long time...definitely should be on your short list if you're looking for a topnotch external drive.

This is a great drive for backups
This is a great drive for backups, not so great if trying to use it for video production. Compared to G-Technologys G-Raid drives these are really slow. REALLY S L O W. Instead of using them for production, I kept 'em and am just using them for backups. PS, I tried USB 3 and esata connections, and neither worked well in production.

G-Tech G-Drive - Media Drive at its best.
This media drive is really all you need for your editing or media storage. This comes with the high data transfer ports, looks great, is stack able and you can daisy chain a number of them together for a raid. The case is very high quality with a heat sink on the bottom but I have not had any problems with overheating. Overall a great product. If you are a professional editor and need an inexpensive high quality expandable drive system, this is a good start.

G-Drives Are Always Reliable Long-term Performance Drives.
You can't go wrong with G-Tech drives. Solid construction and reliable performance. I use my G-Drives on my late 2010 MacBook Pro 17 inch using the eSATA connection and my new Macbook using USB 3.0. Very versatile to work with older and newer Macs. Another key tip in helping to make your drives last longer is....keep a small cheap table top fan near the drive(s) to help keep the area cool....Especially if you have multiple drives stacked on top of each other. A cool drive is a happy drive.
